Why Mentoring is Important for Life and Business Success

Paul Ratsoy, Corey Porter, & Gary Bizzo…
Those names might not mean anything to you, however, to me, these three individuals have changed my life. Why…you ask? Because Paul, Corey, and Gary are my mentors. They have given me guidance in life, in marriage, in fatherhood, and in business.
We all NEED mentors to succeed.
Growing up, I didn’t have a healthy family foundation. My parents were always fighting, we never ate dinner around the dining table together as a family and we never went on camping or road trips. Eventually, my parents had a divorce. Not having a strong father figure, I would look up to Hockey Players as my mentors and role models. I would send them Hockey Cards in the mail asking for autographs, I would line-up for hours outside the Pacific Coliseum to meet my Canucks Mentors, and I would seek guidance from these sports heroes.
However, they weren’t really mentors…they were more like idols. What I needed was not someone distant to look up to but someone close who would look into me, guide and shape me, and help me form my core identity.
It was only in my early 20s that I got my first mentor: Paul Ratsoy. For the first time in my life, someone believe in me, someone invested time in me, someone loved and cared for me in a way that I never found with my parents, my dad, or my hockey heroes.
Week after week after week for several years, Paul Ratsoy invested quality time with me at Bread Garden at Park and Tilford Mall in North Vancouver to make me the man I am today. He listened as I shared my personal struggles regarding my faith, my family, my school, my career, and my life. He never judged, never questioned, never doubted…he just listened, just guided, just shared his insights, experiences, and inner wisdom.
After Paul, it was Corey Porter who spend lunch hour after lunch hour guiding me and forming me while I was an undergrad at UBC. Corey helped me form my spiritual identity and my passion for people. Corey sincerely loved and cared for people, and he imparted this love for people in me too. And now, it’s Gary Bizzo who invests one hour of his time each week on the phone giving me Business Mentorship through the Futurepreneur Program. After years of running multiple successful businesses, Gary is willing and able to invest the time needed to make my businesses a success.
I am eternally grateful for Paul, Corey, and Gary. Thank you.
I can’t really pay them back. However, I can pay it forward…by mentoring others. So, that’s what I have done. I have mentored a little brother Stuart through the Big Brothers Program. I have mentored new immigrants Phil and Ali through the Mosaic Immigrant Services. I have mentored disabled people through the Kudos Experience. And, most importantly, of all, I now am able to mentor my two young kids Rianne and Ryan by giving them a strong family foundation, by eating meals around the dining table, and by taking them on road trips and being the father I never had.
Mentorship is important for many reasons:
1) Guidance – having an experienced friend to learn from and to guide you
2) Accountability – being fully accountable to someone to reach your goals
3) Support – knowing that there is someone who deeply loves and cares for you
This Monday, April 13, 2015 join myself and other dads who will share the importance of having and being mentors and role models at ManTalks!

8 Presence Practices For The Activated Entrepreneur

We always look for the next big breakthrough or big thing to take us to the next level of success. However, it is in the small, simple practices that we do day in and day out that true success will become inevitable.
Here are 8 Presence Practices that will help you live your life and run your business with more presence, personal power and appreciation for the gift of life.
Do Something you Enjoy Every Day:
I usually wake up before the sun (something I had to train myself to do and now love). I spend the first hour of my day stretching, strength training and enjoying a short meditation practice. I then grab my smoothies and head to the golf course for 18 holes with my buddy Ted and dog Sasha (yup, I play at a course that allows dogs). Golf is my four-hour daily presence practice and as I train to play professional it is really teaching me to step up my game in all aspects of my life. By the time I get home from playing I’ve already had a super fulfilling day, and I’m ready to dive into my work. This practice of filling my cup first thing in the AM is a great way to live a fully activated life and become a magnet for awesome people and experiences because of the happy energy I radiate. Can’t recommend it enough!
Live with Intention:
We can learn to harness and strengthen our power as conscious Creators and activated entrepreneurs by living with grounded, clear intentions. I always write down my intentions for the new year, month, week and day ahead. This helps me to stay focused so that when I do go off course I am able to easily come back to my original intent. Knowing ourselves is the key to knowing what we want — this is where a daily practice of meditation and listening really helps. Be intentional to be powerful.
40 Breaths before Work (minimum):
The excited part of me loves diving into my work as soon as I get home from golf. But the wise cracker inside of me knows that I’m way more grounded, clear, intentional and efficient when I follow this practice of connecting to my breath before I open my laptop. 40 breaths takes very little time and it gets me grounded, connected and crystal clear causing my productivity to skyrocket. Days that I skip this important step I find myself scattered, easily distracted and spending more time on Facebook than necessary.
Have Wi-Fi Free Days:
My wife Celeste and I have Wi-Fi free Sundays where we hang out in a world without Wi-Fi. What do we do with all of our spare bandwidth on Wi-Fi free days? We hike with our dog Sasha, work in the garden, make love, sleep in, snuggle late, make great food, pray about our next steps, trade massages, go for an adventure and sometimes we get rebellious and catch up on laundry. I cherish our days without internet.
Mute the Phone and Turn off the Apps:
I know this is a tough one, but I’ve found that turning off Wi-Fi, leaving my phone up in my office and minimizing the number of apps I have to the absolute essentials, has me less distracted with my device and more present and intentional with my time both online and offline. Double win!
Get Plenty of Rest:
In order for our bodies to thrive and our mind to be alert and clear we MUST get enough sleep. Living on adrenaline jolts of caffeine and minimal sleep may work for the short-term when we gotta get shit done, but if we want to have long-lasting health, vibrancy and productivity, then we have to get out of living a fight or flight lifestyle and honour our body’s rhythms. Rest is essential.
Be in Nature at Least 60 minutes per Day:
To be present and consciously connected out in nature is such a precious gift that is healing on so many levels. I am deeply fed and nourished by spending time working, sitting or hiking out in the elements (rain, snow or shine). It takes a clear mind to create awesomeness in the world and there is no better medicine than nature. Get outside and better yet, do all your work outside if you can. I spend at least 4-5 hours outside per day and I’m a better, more focused me because of it.Exercise and Be Healthy:
Exercise and Be Healthy:
The bottom line is, if we fuel our body with the nutrients we need to thrive, and we commit to living active, healthy lives that nourish us, it becomes easy to live in gratitude for the magic of the present moment… and it is in our presence that our true power exists.
Powerful Breath Practice for Cultivating Presence:
This is a powerful meditation practice that will help you focus better, feel calmer, become more mentally clear, improve your ability to use your imagination and be more creatively inspired. It will also energize your body or help you fall asleep (depending on where you need rebalancing).
It is one of the audios from my Cowabunga Vision Quest 40 Day eCourse which you can Name your Price and register for at www.CowabungaVisionQuest.com

Journeys of Spirituality

Another epic, inspiring and sold out ManTalks Monday wrapped up a week ago! Thank you to everyone who attended who made the evening such a success, and big thanks to Indochino, who hosted us again for another amazing evening.

ManTalks Spirituality
ManTalks Spirituality kicked off with a wonderful introduction and meditation lead by our founder Connor Beaton.

This month we brought three local speakers to our stage to share their journeys of spirituality, purpose and living in alignment with your truth. It was a night filled with laughter, deep insights and inspiration from each speaker and wonderful engagement from the community.

Brad Morris from Cowabunga Life
The first speaker to take our stage was Brad Morris from Cowabunga Life

Brad Morris – Cowabunga Life
The first speaker to take our stage was Brad Morris from Cowabunga Life.
Our three biggest takeaways from Brad:

  1. The brightest realizations can come from the times where we struggle the most. When it comes to your dreams, give yourself plenty of time to set the stage for the unfolding of your passion.
  2. When it comes to your dreams, give yourself plenty of time to set the stage for the unfolding of your passion.
  3. There is inescapable growth that comes with the territory of living your passion, requiring regular check-ins with yourself to ensure you are in alignment with your passion and becoming the type of person it takes to fulfill that dream.

Chris Brandt – Music Heals Canada
Our second speaker was Chris Brandt from Music Heals Canada.
Our three biggest takeaways from Chris:

  1. The biggest challenges you face are your prep for ultimate teaching. Your experiences add weight and depth to your message, the darkest of times give you access to deeper compassion with others and the ability to deliver your message with irrefutable impact.
  2. Your spiritual beliefs either cage you in or they liberate you. It is up to you to design your beliefs according to what feels right to you in your core.
  3. Go through life declaring: “This is my truth right now” because inevitably your truth will shift and change as you grow.

Our final speaker of the night was Mike Zaremba co-founder of Float House

Mike Zaremba – Float House
Our final speaker of the night was Mike Zaremba co-founder of Float House.
Our three biggest takeaways from Mike:Love more, fear less.

  1. Love more, fear less.
  2. Everything we do, everything we say and all of our interactions influence our states of consciousness. It is a great investment of our time and energy to contemplate our personal relationship to the things around us and discern if the relationship actually serves us or not.
  3. Achieving our goals comes from understanding one’s own power which is a by-product of self-awareness and self-love.

Cause and Effect – Understanding The Cost of What You Do and Don't Do

First we all need to understand that we are human beings in a physical body. This is not a choice, but a fact. Therefore, movement is part of our everyday life.
Unfortunately, it seems that for the average person nowadays a lack of movement is more common place.
I often start off talks I do for organizations by breaking down the amount of time we spend sitting in a day and not moving. It’s staggering!
Recent research suggests that a sedentary lifestyle is the worst thing in regards to your health. In other words, someone who is smoking cigarettes but staying active is considered to have better health and more likely to fight off disease than someone who has a sedentary lifestyle.
If you think about that for a second, it makes a lot of sense. Take, for example, your lymphatic system that relies heavily on the cardiovascular system for its circulation. A lack of movement could potentially slow and stagnate this circulation causing toxins to accumulate, and immune cells are not being delivered to the parts of the body where they are needed. Stagnation will occur to any part of the body when that particular part is not being used.
The body is a very efficient machine, but it’s adaptations are dictated by us. Just like the thoughts we choose to entertain in our minds will have a great impact on how we conduct ourselves in our lives, the quality and quantity of movement will have a direct impact on our physical bodies.
Our body will turn over its trillions of cells within a year. How it does this, is in great part dictated by us.
If you decide you are going to be one of those people that sits in a chair for 8 or more hours a day and do not address the cost that has on your body, your body will adapt to that dominant position. This, of course, causes a host of problems, and they get worse before they get better. However they can also be reversed if you pay attention and put in not only the right kind of work, but also the right amount. This is going to look different for everyone and reveals the importance of taking an individual approach.
Some of the best athletes in world may be producing the same kind of world class results but have significantly different training approaches. These highly-tuned individuals have attained the body awareness that enables them to train specifically in line with their individual adaptation capabilities to maximize gains and performance.
So now that we have a better understanding of the cost of what you do and don’t do, let’s talk a little bit about how you can start to approach your training or movement practice with this new perspective.
I feel that taking a look at what you don’t do and addressing it, will usually help the things you do. The things you do all the time you can probably handle doing less of, but the things you don’t do are usually the things you need the most.
These will usually be your weak links. Addressing these is very important if you want to sustain a healthy physical body that’s built for longevity and resilience.
Ask yourself what’s the biggest cost of what you do a lot of, in terms of physical movement, and or lack thereof. If you are sitting all day, chances are you need to work on your mobility and flexibility.
You also need to understand that whether it’s sitting all day or doing cross-fit or even yoga, all of these types of movement/non-movement have a cost on the body. Some are obviously more damaging than others, but we should ultimately all be aiming to achieve some balance in the various types of movement that dominate our day to day lives, if we want to keep enjoying movement into our later years.
It’s also important to take a closer look at the things you are doing. I’ll use the gym as it is a great example and easy to relate to.
While there are many great things you can do in a traditional gym setting, from the broader view of how our bodies move in everyday life, it can quickly become quite limited.
Not only that, but many gym goers are so caught up in only training to achieve a certain look that they won’t even perform many of what I consider to be some of the best exercises. The exercises they do choose they often tend to perform incorrectly and over-train them, leading to a body that is more out of balance and prone to injury.
It comes down to creating and growing your sense of body awareness and different movement you expose yourself to. Start learning about how every individual part of your body is supposed to be able to move, how they move together, and where you are restricted.
I would recommend getting some help along the way. I do this professionally, and I am still constantly discovering new ways to do things and I hire coaches to help me along the way. Keep exploring new ways to move your body and keep asking yourself what the cost is of what you are doing and not doing. Be well!

Choosing Happiness – How My Darkest Moments Made Me Who I Am Today

My darkest day began quite abruptly on a cold February morning at my home in beautiful Whistler, BC, just after Valentine’s day. I was picked up out of my bed by my shirt, thrown across my room and repeatedly punched in the stomach while being screamed at by my infuriated assailant! (Not the best way to start your day.) He was actually one of my roommates (there were 6 of us in a massive house at the time) and while this may seem crazy, it wasn’t really that out of line, as the night before, during a rather crazy house party that we had, I had slept with his girlfriend. Whoops. Needless to say, a little cocaine mixed with copious amounts of alcohol can lead to bad decisions.
To make matters worse, within the previous week, I had done the same to another friend too. That one was with a friend’s ex, but it was a recent ex and he wanted to get back together with her.
The previous summer I worked hard so that I could take the winter off of work and devote my time to skiing and pursuing my dream of becoming a professional skier! I was working out at the gym. Skiing every day and trying to learn new tricks and get better so that I could do more filming, get more sponsors, and hopefully start to get paid to do what I loved!
Early in the season, while tree skiing one beautiful powder day in January, I caught the tip of my ski on a tree stump buried beneath the snow that I couldn’t see. My body kept moving forward, but the tip of my ski stayed in the same place. My ankle and leg were wrenched fiercely out to the side and I was flipped onto my back. You’d think that while contained in a big solid ski boot your ankle would be pretty safe, but despite this, I managed to badly tear a few ligaments in my ankle which resulted in my season being cut very short!
Since I had set myself up to not have to work that winter, I still had money coming in, but without being able to pursue my passion, or walk for that matter, my days were quite depressing. This was before I knew everything I now know about nutrition and exercise and I basically just sat around every day playing internet poker and slipping deeper and deeper into depression.
There was one day in particular that will be forever burned into my mind, where I spent the entire day sitting at the kitchen table, playing online poker, and watching over 16 inches (40cm) of snow accumulate on the railing of our deck in front of my eyes. If I were able to go out and enjoy this snow, I would have been incredibly happy! Instead, thinking about what I was missing out on, and about having to crutch through it if I were brave enough to leave the house, it was one of the more depressing days I’ve ever experienced.
Fast forward back to me being my roommate’s punching bag. After he had finished with me, he left me there lying on the floor, beaten and broken (literally). I crawled into my closet, shut the sliding door and started crying. It was by far the darkest and most disgusting moment of my entire life. I had just completely destroyed two friendships, my dreams of becoming a professional skier were fading by the day, I had alienated myself from my entire friend group, and to top it off, I was suffering from the blinding self-hatred that typically comes with a cocaine hangover.
So what did I do? Did I do the mature thing? Man up and approach my roommate and deal with all the problems I’ve created? Of course not. I was an extremely depressed, hungover, beaten, broken 21-year-old and I did what I’m sure many people in my shoes would’ve done … I ran.
Eyes swollen from crying so much, I hobbled around and packed up my stuff and left that very morning! I caught a taxi into town and hopped on a bus to Vernon, BC where I had a couple friends that were outside of the group I’d just alienated myself from. I spent the next few weeks battling the fiercest depression I’ve ever experienced. Everything sucked. I hated myself. I didn’t want to go on…
I don’t know specifically what shifted or why, but at some point a few weeks after the original incident, a thought came into my head. The thought was that if I was ever going to be happy again, I needed to forgive myself and choose to be happy. I needed to start focusing on the positive and deal with my current situation. I realized that my roommate wasn’t going to forgive me, but that didn’t have to mean that I couldn’t forgive myself. I’m not saying that it was just a poof, all of a sudden I was an excited and happy person again, but once I started to forgive myself and choose to be happy things slowly did get brighter.
After another month of building myself back up, I went back to Whistler to clean up the mess I’d made of my life. I slowly dealt with everything and started to put my life back together.
While this event was an incredibly dark and painful time in my life, I am very grateful for having experienced it. For it was this experience that taught me that happiness truly is something one has to find within, and even in the worst of times, it is possible to do so. This idea of choosing happiness has stayed with me ever since and was one of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned in my life!
Thank you so much for taking the time to dive into a little piece of what made me who I am today.

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked what I wanted to be wen I grew up. I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment. I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon

AWAKENING TO MY DIVINE PURPOSE

Are you on a journey of self-discovery, wondering “What is your purpose?”
Like many on the journey of personal growth, I spent years reading empowering books and attending various transformational seminars.
Early on in my journey, my motivations were very vague. I just wanted to be “better” and “happier” but without any real sense of what that looked like and or where I was going.
I had a hunger to change my circumstances because I was becoming weary of my situation and felt deep down that I had the power to change rather than just settling for my current reality.
My motivations were earnest; I wanted to make more money and break myself and my family out of the history of poverty and scarcity thinking. In a way, my intentions and reasons were self-serving and the notion of fulfilling my “purpose” or having impact in the world felt ludicrous.
The belief I held then was “why should I care about others when I can’t even take of myself?”. I simply was not capable of holding notions of serving others when my mind was preoccupied primarily with survival and clouded with many old unresolved beliefs that held me back from achieving greatness in my life.
A couple of years into an intense period that involved attending many workshops, I made an incredibly difficult decision. I invested a significant portion of my income, which I technically did not have at hand at that time, into a private year long program for heart-centered entrepreneurs.
The program was designed for spiritually conscious individuals with a big vision to create meaningful transformations in others’ lives and businesses while thriving financially.
A few months into this program, I began to feel an emergence of something I had never felt before. It was an awakening of a genuine desire to create a business that added meaningful value to others, and that extended beyond my needs.
I began to think beyond my immediate situation and the mere desire to break myself out of scarcity. I knew I wanted to “help” people in some way but had virtually no clue how I could do that. This process of unraveling my purpose would continue for another two years of intense work before I gained any clear sense of confidence and embodiment of my purpose.
My previous experience with most workshops and programs, especially anything business related, was that they were “Action driven.” We learned the steps of how to create a business that can generate a big income, but completely ignored internal elements that can cause you to self-sabotage and prevent yourself from ever attracting the abundance you desire.
That is why I attribute my awakening to the unique design of the heart-centered entrepreneurs program. With virtually no “business” elements at all, the first three months were dedicated entirely to clearing out old beliefs and creating a solid foundation from which one can set off to build a business around one’s true soul calling.
I later realized how significant the experience was for me. I recognized that my “purpose” was not to be “found” per se, but will naturally emerge once I clear out enough of the “stuff” that’s in the way.
I believe you have a purpose, and your responsibility is to uncover it and share it with others in whatever capacity your soul yearns for.
If you have been on a journey of self-discovery asking yourself “What is my purpose?” without getting any clear answers. Then my invitation for you is to keep moving forward, to continue growing and view your current stage as a process of removing the stuff that comes in the way of uncovering the purpose that already lives within you.

Kicking It Off…

Welcome to ManTalks!
I’m Connor Beaton the Founder and CEO of ManTalks, and I’m super excited to kick off the launch of our blog, which is going to host amazing conversations with extraordinary people. My intention is to provide some insight into who we are, why we are here, what you can expect from us and why you’ll want to stick around and check out what happens next.

First off, why ManTalks? Why does an organization for men even exist?
Our mission is to redefine what it means to be a self-aware, high performing and influential man in the world; the type of man who others look up to as a role model. We, like most men, love to win, grow, thrive, be inspired and kick ass! ManTalks is as much about growth as it is about openness, honesty, vulnerability and shifting the conversation around masculinity. We are here to smash through some of the negative stereotypes surrounding the men in our societies and replace those ideas with new expanded possibilities. We intend to continue creating the space for men to thrive, learn from one another and learn from some of the most inspiring men on the planet. ManTalks is a space for men to share their greatest challenges, greatest wins and biggest insights on success, parenting, spirituality, business, sexuality…. you name it, we are going to tackle it.

Who is ManTalks for?
Anyone with a pulse, really. But mostly:
Men who want to succeed.
Men who are willing to do the work to grow.
Men who are open to being a part of a growing community of inspiring, kick ass mentors and willing to contribute and share their unique perspectives and insights for the greater good of the community.
Men who are strong enough to process their emotions and who wish to deepen their understanding and expand their ability to express themselves constructively.
Men wanting to be better fathers.
Men wanting to be better husbands.
Men wanting to be better leaders.
Men wanting to be better partners.
Men wanting to be better lovers.
Men wanting to be better men.

Are women welcome?
Hell ya! One of our goals is to enhance the perception of men in the eyes of women. That is why we welcome them into ManTalks Monday — a community of men, who continue to show up and do the inner work needed for them to become the men the world needs. ManTalks is a space for both genders to unite and understand the masculine in all of its forms. This is a human conversation, from the masculine perspective. We believe that in order for women to be truly liberated, to have true equality, we as men need to liberate ourselves first from any shame, guilt or negativity surrounding masculinity in our global communities.

That said, our ManTalks Monday events are open to everyone. We also host additional events and workshops just for men, so they can dig deep, learn through each other’s humanity and grow together. To be completely upfront and honest, ManTalks isn’t for everyone. It’s NOT for: those who are closed and unwilling to learn, transform or grow.
People who are outrageously judgmental or want to shame others for their life choices. Individuals who are not willing to look at themselves or claim responsibility for their lives. Those unwilling to make the internal and external shifts required for a healthy and vibrant life.

What We Believe
We believe in unlimited potential, growth and in contributing to the people around us. Contribution and community are two of the main core values that make up ManTalks and influence everything we intend to accomplish.

We believe every man can make this world great through the expression of his greatness. We believe that at the core of men’s ability to be exceptional fathers, partners, and leaders, resides a positive relationship with themselves and the unique expression of their masculinity.

We believe in the transformative power of honesty, vulnerability and authenticity. We believe in reinforcing the courage and strength it takes for men to do the work, break free of stereotypes and beliefs that keep them stuck, and redefine what masculinity means to them.

We believe in aligning words with action. We believe every man can leave an exceptional legacy, and we are here to ensure the men in our community leave this world a better place through their unique contribution.

The Possibility We See
Imagine a world where men understand the difference between anger and aggression. A world where men have the tools to communicate and process emotions, compassionately raise their children, foster greater collaboration across borders, religions, genders and races.

Imagine a world filled with men who inspire greatness through their example. These might sound like lofty goals, but we aren’t here to fuck around. We are here to create a world of men who aspire to live by the values of community, authenticity, purpose, honesty, courage, accountability and strength. A global community of men who are truly free to be examples of authentic masculine presence. We mean business.

We intend to accomplish our vision by creating spaces where men feel inspired to share the deepest, most authentic aspects of their lives. Our vision comes to life through our live events, online community, our ManTalks Mastermind, and some additional events we have yet to announce,

If ManTalks sounds like the community you are looking for, and you see great value within what we stand for, join us. Join the conversation. Join the movement.
Oh and one more thing;
Welcome to the tribe.
